The Bottleworks Bear Hunt

During the COVID-19 lockdowns in Victoria, communities across the state found creative ways to connect and spread joy during a time of uncertainty. One initiative was the “bear hunts” that emerged in neighbourhoods, inspired by the children’s book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Residents would place teddy bears in their windows, fences, or front yards, creating a fun, socially distanced scavenger hunt for local children out on their daily walks. It became a symbol of solidarity, offering people an activity amidst the challenges of lockdown life.

In South Geelong, the bear hunt took on an artistic twist at The Bottleworks, a historic site known for its industrial charm.

As part of the bear hunt movement, The Bottleworks featured large, spray-painted bear murals on the exterior of its iconic shedding.

The artworks were driven by the project team for The Bottleworks in collaboration with local graffiti artists – insert names Silly Sullys, Mandy Dollery, Jacklyn Foster transforming the building into a canvas of colour, creativity, and community spirit.

The bear murals were temporary—scheduled for removal as part of site development—they remain a fond memory for locals, capturing a moment of unity and expression during an otherwise isolating period.
